You either know the name, or you don’t. And if you know the name, you either know where in the world she is, or you don’t! Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego is the first computer game I remember playing at school. We had a tiny bank of computers that would take far too long to load up, and twenty of us would have to rotate through to take turns on this most awesome game of geography and investigation.
Carmen Sandiego is a mastermind villain, sending her agents around the world to wreak havoc. Your job is to track down her henchmen, and eventually catch up with Carmen Sandiego herself. You visit locations, collect clues (in the form of riddles or puns) and slowly eliminate suspects until you can issue an arrest warrant. It’s a totally cool idea now, and as a 10 year old, it was AWESOME. You don’t even realise it is educational, which is the best kind of learning!
The game franchise is still going strong. You can check out the official website here. You can even play online for free, here.
Did you play Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego? What was the first computer game you remember playing?
I am sharing today via Flog Your Blog Friday.

No to Carmen SanDiego, but Pacman would have been the first. My best friend got a hand-held game for her birthday … then promptly broke her arm on the same day. What a shame, I had to play it so she could see how it worked …
Good ol’ Pac Man! How convenient (or suspicious?) that you got to play your friends game!
I remembered that title from somewhere but couldn’t place it.
My earliest memories are takeaway shop Space Invaders, then Donkey Kong, in that orange case. The first PC game I remember playing was called Police Quest, where you had little missions to fulfil.
When I was in High School I had a part time job at David Jones and I remember the manic Christmas rush for the Sega Master System, or Mega System… One of those…
I’ve completely grown out of gaming now, so much so that I have a recent post you will probably hate! But we can still be friends ;o)
I am sure I won’t hat you forever! π
THANK-YOU!!!! Oh I loved this game and have always assumed my boys would never know the joys. I don’t know why it never occurred to me to see if it was online but it didn’t for some reason. Hooray – I just know they’ll love it as much as I did π
Happy to help! It was a top little game, and I was really pleased to find it online too.
The first game I can remember playing is my parents version of Leisure-suit Larry before they figured out how to put a password on it. We had and loved Carmen also though.
Good old Leisure Suit Larry! I forgot about that one. I also remember sneaking to Dad’s computer to play that. I remember not long after he brought his portable* computer home from work he and Mum sitting up at the table being very secretive about what they were doing – I am pretty sure they were playing this game!
*Portable, in that it was huge, but had a handle!
i remember the name but i dont remember the game. we were lucky we had friends with a 64 aswell so we all swapped games. my favourites would have to have been ghostbusters and the summer and winter games and if i was over them california games.
thanks for the flashback FYBFx
I remember playing Carmen Sandiego at primary school. I think it was on an old Mac with a green screen. Thanks for the flashback. I know what I’ll be playing for the next while.
I used to visit my public library every week to play Carmen Sandiego – it was THE best game! Thanks for the reminder.
Never played Carmen Sandiego- but I have heard of her, did they make a TV show or movie? You will cringe but the first ever computer game I remember playing was Asteroids. Green screen. I don’t even want to explain!
We had a Commodore 64 and the first game I played was Punch and Judy – very OLD SCHOOL. It was AWESOME, cartridge games. I heard about it but never played it π
Have never heard of Carmen! But she looks pretty cool!
My first computer game? That Atari tennis thing with 2 vertical lines and a ball.
My favourite? Tetris. Forever and always.
